Perfect environmental integration was the prime criterion for selecting the Schifflände Restaurant conversion design, based on elegant, discreet merging with Hallwiler Lake’s outstanding landscape.
A challenge brilliantly taken up by the LIGNO in-Raum architectural practice through its design involving a wood-clad façade featuring vertical slats and Stamisol FA breathable, waterproof membrane, combining to enhance both aesthetics and thermal performance.
In 2009, architects at the LIGNO in-Raum practice were commissioned with converting the Schifflände restaurant, a traditional building nestling in an idyllic landscape on the banks of the Hallwiler Lake. The building’s state of dilapidation and its low ceiling height weighed strongly in favour of complete reconstruction. The project was directly inspired by the restaurant’s natural environment and the surrounding topography.
Quintessential environmental integration
The architects imagined a plinth supporting a straight building, 2 metres higher than the old structure.
Its upper section with its wood façade and gable roof comprises 2 floors accommodating a dining room for 100 guests and 5 bedrooms.
To achieve perfect harmony with the landscape, the façade was covered with pre-painted grey Oregon pine cladding to form a slender linear structure featuring slats over 10 metres high extending up to the gable apex. This ensures the elegance, charm and sobriety of the premises, while suggesting a warm welcoming environment.
In the centre, a break in the cladding reflects the edge outline, bringing subtle rhythm to the structure.
The intentionally deep set window openings create fascinating breaks protected by sun blinds. Certain and windows and balconies are revealed behind the cladding slats to form a homogeneous, peaceful arrangement punctuated by areas protected from view.
Stamisol FA façade membrane: convincing arguments
The tongue-and-groove joints between the 10 mm-spaced vertical cladding slats were glued, and then mounted in units to the supporting frame composed of black lasured horizontal rails.
The architects opted for black Stamisol FA breathable waterproof membrane specially designed by Serge Ferrari for exposure behind the open-work timber siding.
