After nearly 4 years navigating around the planet, Tara left for a new 7-month expedition in the Mediterranean in May 2014. The current mission embraces both a scientific assignment on plastics pollution and an awareness campaign on the multiple environmental challenges faced by the Mediterranean Sea.
Having further strengthened its partnership with Tara Oceans, Serge Ferrari is again supplying all the high-performance composite materials required for protecting on-board equipment and ensuring the crew’s comfort. Canopies over auxiliaries, mainsail and tank protective covers, cockpit seating and closing assemblies, dodgers, Silcord and shade sail… Serge Ferrari has responded to all Tara’s needs!
Mainsail protection: “It’s super strong!” says Samuel Audrain, Tara’s captain.
Made from Serge Ferrari Stamoid Top composite, the mainsail cover takes full advantage of its exceptional technical characteristics. Fully resistant to extreme temperatures, the material properties this flexible composite membrane remain totally intact at temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +70 °C; an essential characteristic for maintaining the schooner’s sails in perfect condition during its different expeditions around the globe. “Protecting our sails is of prime importance. Our rigging is the motor that propels Tara”, adds François Aurat, a Tara crew member. This membrane effectively offers many advantages that enable the crew to live this expedition its maximum potential. The cover fully envelopes and protects the sails from the various aggressive environmental factors (UV radiation, sea air, sand, etc.) and its flexibility ensures its easy handling for the crew.
Stamoid Top’s unique advantages:
• 100% waterproof: multi-layer composite material
• Exceptional service life: very high resistance to UV radiation and mould
• Colourfastness: dope-dyed coating process
• Compactness: remarkable flexibility of composite
• No deformation: strength of high-tenacity polyester yarn
• Easy upkeep: stain-proof shield, simple cleaning with soapy water.
A first test for Soltis 86 and Tara Méditerranée
The orange-coloured Soltis 86 composite screens were tested for the first time on the schooner’s on-board dodgers. “These dodgers are terrific communication media and stand up to everything”, adds communication and partnership manager Magali Puiseux. As veritable windbreaks, it shelters the cockpit and safeguards movement aboard thanks to their high-performance material properties including exceptional breaking and tearing strengths.
These screens were therefore selected for their many advantages, specifically ensured by exclusive Précontraint Serge Ferrari technology. These include:
• Dimensional stability
• Thinness and high strength
• 100% recyclability through the Texyloop® patented process.
Serge Ferrari is proud to again accompany Tara Expeditions by surrounding its intrepid crew with the world’s best protective materials!
